Job Description

SUMMARY: Working with children between the ages of 6 weeks and 12 years (depending on classroom assignment), Teacher IV positions provide the primary leadership role in implementing activities and supervision for a set classroom, as well as taking a leadership role for their assigned age group (infant – school age). They are also required to maintain safe supervision and sanitary practices at all times, and actively plan and work towards promoting the development of children in their care according to required Municipality of Anchorage) MOA licensing, and the Child Development Center (CDC) standards. A Teacher IV is required to confidently lead activities and routines all throughout the day, lead coworker’s practice within their assigned classroom, and informing the practice of the center. This position receives 120 hours of new staff training to learn or review the standards of working at our licensed child care center at Woodland Park. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Punctual and reliable attendance, including the ability to open a classroom at 7am or close a classroom until 6pm if scheduled
  • Maintain positive, professional relations with supervisor and co-workers, including mentoring new staff and Teacher I’s in site practices, working with parents, the basics of child development, supervision, and other topics as assigned
  • Lead or co-lead short trainings during Staff Development days on relevant topics of choice
  • Maintain positive working relationships with parents, and report on their child’s progress, development, and daily activities
  • Assist in planning age group curriculum, and lead implementation of daily curriculum and activities for children within your class, including utilizing co-worker’s skills and site curriculum
  • Confidently manage a classroom in ratio, including continual active supervision of children
  • Learn and use Boys & Girls Club positive guidance techniques appropriate to your age group including consistent positive feedback and relationship building, zoning classroom areas, counting children before, during and after transitions, redirecting unwanted behavior, etc.
  • Maintain learning areas in your assigned classroom, including rotating materials on a schedule and as needed, and setting up meaningful activities and materials, for example maintaining a classroom library with diverse books that include the curriculum theme, visuals to support literacy and classroom rules for area, and positive, creative read aloud experiences
  • Work with individual children who need more support, or different support than a typically behaving child, including leading parent meetings or conducting assessments of child’s development to support parents, school district, or pediatrician
  • Support children transitioning in or out of your assigned classroom by meeting with coworkers and parents as needed, helping children ‘visit’ their new classroom, and following site practices to support a smooth transition
  • Lead teaching team in following all licensing standards including maintaining adult to child ratios, consistently implementing the routine, maintaining children’s daily records, and having meaningful child focused interactions in the classroom
  • Maintain and keep a clean and sanitary classroom at all times, and assist in upkeep of all child care areas as required
  • Write accurate incident reports and deliver within 1 hour to CDC office as needed
  • Dispense medications to children as needed, and only as permitted by parents and child care licensing regulations
  • Ability to achieve and maintain CPR certification
  • Assist in all licensed child care programs as needed, or as assigned by supervisor or other manager
  • Set and work towards yearly professional development goals based on Tier IV of Alaska’s Core Knowledge & Competencies (AK CKC’s)
  • Attend required trainings for child care licensing, Learn & Grow, and as assigned


The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required:

  • 6 months experience with children of age group applying for, and 2-year minimum of total early education experience required
  • Early Childhood Education OEC or 18 ECE university or college credits required
  • AA or BA in Early Childhood Education preferred
  • Ability to make decisions and take responsibility for maintaining the safety of children at all times
  • Ability to achieve and maintain first aid and CPR certification
  • Must pass a name-based and fingerprint criminal records background check

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to walk, crouch, sit, talk, see and hear. Employees for this position are also required to be able to repetitively lift up to forty pounds to perform the daily functions of the job or maintain child safety. Work Environment

The work environment is a busy setting with occasional interruptions occurring, including visits from children, parents & staff. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work outside in daily weather conditions with children. The noise level in the work environment is sometimes loud. In addition, we train all adults within our Clubs on the responsibilities of Mandated Reporting, red-flag behaviors, and to report any behavior that is prohibited within our policies, including one to one contact between a child and adult, any unwanted or otherwise prohibited physical contact, and other inappropriate activities that are not considered professional. All employees and volunteers are required to cooperate with any investigation of abuse, and must have the ability to pass all local, state, national and international background checks before they are eligible for hire, and each year thereafter.
