It’s Work Together Wednesday—time to build something together! When children build together with each other and adults, they explore math and science
concepts and develop their social and early literacy skills.
Knowing how to work with others to accomplish something is an important skill. As adults, we use it all the time in the workplace. In fact, taking turns,
finding solutions, giving and receiving feedback, and getting along with others are all important skills required for a strong workforce.
The foundation for all these skills is built in early childhood, starting at birth. In early childhood education programs throughout Alaska, young children
and teachers work closely together every day. These nurturing relationships are at the heart of learning for young children. Now that many programs
are temporarily closed due to COVID-19, children may be missing their teachers and their peers. Virtual communication platforms such as Skype and Zoom
offer great ways to stay in touch.
At home, work with your child to build something today, whether it’s a block tower or a pillow fort. You can use all kinds of creative materials: sticks
from the yard, pans from the kitchen, or empty toilet paper rolls. Ask questions to inspire critical thinking, such as “What do you think will happen
if we put this here?”
