Celebrating Provider Appreciation Day: Honoring Alaska’s Early Educators

May 8, 2026

Join thread in celebrating Provider Appreciation Day on May 8th

Each year, communities across the country come together to celebrate Provider Appreciation Day. A time to recognize the early child care educators, teachers, and child care professionals who support young children and families every day. Established in 1995 by the National Association for Family Child Care, Provider Appreciation Day began as a grassroots effort to honor child care providers and has grown into a nationwide and global celebration. Today, it recognizes the essential role early educators play in helping children learn, grow, and thrive.

At thread, we know that quality child care programs are built on the dedication, knowledge, and care of early educators. Across Alaska, child care professionals show up every day to support children’s development, partner with families, and strengthen communities. Their work makes it possible for families to participate in the workforce and helps set the foundation for lifelong success.

This year, Provider Appreciation Day also holds special meaning for thread as we celebrate 40 years of strengthening early care and learning in Alaska. To mark this milestone, we’re inviting early educators across the state to join us in a shared, hands-on celebration of connection and community.

A Statewide Celebration: 40 Years, 40 Links

To recognize this moment, each licensed child care program in Alaska will receive a package from thread containing 40 strips of construction paper and glue sticks. Together with the children in their care, educators can create a paper chain. Each link represents a year of impact, connection, and growth.

This activity is more than a craft. It’s an opportunity to:

  • Talk with children about milestones, birthdays, and celebrations
  • Explore the idea of connection and how each link, like each person, plays an important role
  • Reflect on the relationships that make early learning meaningful

How to Participate:

1. Create your paper chain
Use the materials provided to build a paper chain with the children in your care. This can be part of your art time, a group activity, or a simple way to spark conversation.

2. Celebrate together
Take a moment to talk with children about what it means to celebrate something special and how we are all connected.

3. Capture the moment
Take a photo of your completed paper chain. If you have family permission, include the children, or take a photo of yourself with your creation.

4. Share with Alaska
Upload your photo to our shared Padlet webpage.
If you’d like, include your program name, location, or a short reflection on how thread has supported your work. Together, these photos will create a statewide visual celebration of early educators and children across Alaska.

A Moment of Appreciation

Provider Appreciation Day is a reminder of the lasting impact early educators have, not just in the classroom or home, but across generations. Your work supports children’s growth, strengthens families, and builds healthier, more connected communities. To every early educator across Alaska: thank you! We are grateful for your dedication, your expertise, and the care you bring to your work each day. We are honored to celebrate this milestone with you. Happy Provider Appreciation Day!
