2025 Quality Improvement Program of the Year Award Recipient – Child Care Center
Anchorage Cooperative Preschool
Anchorage Cooperative Preschool (ACP) began in 1970 as a small group of involved parents who wanted to support an amazing teacher. The parents took on all the tasks of running a preschool so the teacher could focus on what she does best, which is provide a caring, supportive environment for children to learn.
The cooperative model has evolved over the years, and while the program no longer relies on all-parent volunteers, they are still an integral and appreciated part of ACP. ACP uses a play-based model with a social-emotional learning focus to nurture children’s love of learning and help them grow to be helpful and kind members of our community. ACP believes in teaching families the value of being involved in their child’s education so families and children can learn together.
Jessica McCartan has been the Director of ACP for a little over two years, and in that time, the program has grown from a handful of students to now serving 45 families with five wonderful teachers. Jessica’s mission has been focused on restoring the sense of community, stability, and supportive environment that the school was founded on so long ago.
“I am honored to work alongside a team of incredibly kind and dedicated teachers, and we all enjoy being part of such a positive learning environment,” she said.
Jessica does not come from a background of early education — her education is in physical therapy. However, she finds a surprising amount of overlap between the two settings. Jessica took on this role after being a parent volunteer and Board member. When the program needed help, she felt honored to step up and support it.
“I feel great pride in having the opportunity to assume this role and rebuild this great cooperative preschool model,” she said. “I absolutely could not have done it without our incredible teachers and the supportive parents within ACP, and I am excited to continue to serve ACP and our community.”
