Alaska SEED, in collaboration with the State of Alaska Preschool Development Grant B-5, is excited to announce the 2026 Alaska SEED Mini ROOTS Award is now accepting applications. The 2026 Alaska SEED Mini ROOTS Award is a monetary award intended to strengthen retention and reduce turnover for early childhood and school-age professionals.
The 2026 Alaska SEED Mini ROOTS Award application opens on September 25, 2026 and closes on November 16, 2026, or while funding is available. The award amount for the 2026 Alaska SEED ROOTS Award will be $500.
To be eligible, applicants must be a current/active member of the Alaska SEED Registry and be currently employed as a paid employee of a licensed or approved child care program, Head Start/Early Head Start, Tribal Head Start/Early Head Start, Parents as Teachers, or a paraprofessional working in a Pre-Elementary classroom in a school district. Please see the definitions below.

Eligibility Requirements
There are two eligibility requirements. You are eligible to apply if you:
Are a current/active member in the Alaska SEED Registry.
If you work in early childhood or school-age education, you are invited to join the free Alaska SEED Registry and take the next step in your professional development journey.
The Alaska SEED Registry is a system to track all your training and education in one place. Your education determines your level on the Alaska SEED Career Ladder, and your membership allows you to apply for various financial supports like the Alaska SEED ROOTS Award.
To join the Alaska SEED Registry, you’ll need to upload all of your education and training documentation to our online form. Learn more here.
Alaska SEED Registry applications are processed in the order in which they are received and may take up to 30 business days until the Alaska SEED Career Ladder certificate is sent.
Are currently employed as a paid employee of a licensed or approved child care program, Head Start/Early Head Start, Tribal Head Start/Early Head Start, Parents as Teachers, or a paraprofessional working in a school-district Pre-Elementary classroom.
Definitions:
Licensed Child Care Provider: Any child care provider working at a Child Care Program that is licensed by the State of Alaska, Child Care Program Office (CCPO) or the Municipality of Anchorage, Child Care Licensing (CCL).
Approved Child Care Provider: Any child care provider working at a Child Care Program that is approved by the State of Alaska, Child Care Program Office (CCPO) Child Care Assistance (CCA) Program as an Approved Relative Provider, or an Approved In-Home Provider.
Head Start/Early Head Start (Including Tribal) Home Visitor, Teacher, or Assistant Teacher: Any home visitor, lead teacher, or assistant teacher currently working in a Head Start program serving children birth to five years of age.
Parents as Teachers Provider: A Parents as Teachers (PAT) Provider is a certified professional who delivers early childhood education and support services to families through the Parents as Teachers program.
School District Pre-Elementary Paraprofessional: A paraprofessional, not a certified teacher, working in a school district Pre-Elementary classroom.

Two-Step Application Process

Step 1: Join the Alaska SEED Registry or renew your free membership.
If you are not yet a member of the Alaska SEED Registry or your membership has expired, you must first complete your Alaska SEED Registry application and upload all of your training and education documentation to your registry profile.
The Alaska SEED Registry application is found in the ServicePortal, where you can check the status of your membership and access other services like thread training.
Step 2
Step 2: Complete and submit your Mini ROOTS Award application.
Please fully complete and sign your Mini ROOTS Award. You will receive a confirmation email when the form has been submitted. Check your junk mail if you do not receive a confirmation email.
The application requires you to upload a legible copy of your completed and signed W9 Form. Save the form to your computer before completing and uploading. Acceptable file types include PDF, JPEG, or PNG. Images must be clear, bright, and not blurry.
The W-9 Form is a legal document and must be free of any errors. To avoid mistakes, delays, or denial of your application, please ensure your W-9 Form is completed neatly and accurately. Use only blue or black ink, or complete the form digitally. Do not scribble, scratch out, write over, erase, use white-out, or spill anything on the form. If an error occurs, please download a new blank W-9 and start again.

Eligibility & Employment Criteria
Are paid employees of a licensed child care facility who are support staff eligible for the 2026 Alaska SEED Mini ROOTS Award?
Yes, the Alaska SEED Mini ROOTS Award is intended to recognize all those who are working in a licensed or approved child care program, Head Start/Early Head Start, Tribal Head Start, Parents as Teachers, or paraprofessional working in a school district Pre-Elementary classroom. This includes: teachers, administrators, coaches and bus drivers.
What is the minimum age to be a paid employee of a child care facility?
In a child care center a caregiver may be at least 16 years of age. In a Family Child Care (FCC) or Group Home a caregiver must be at least 18 years old.
I work for a military program licensed by the Department of Defense; do I qualify for this award?
No. Early educators working in military base child care programs are not eligible for the ROOTS Award.
I work remotely from another state; do I qualify for this award?
No. Early educators must be residing in the state of Alaska at the time of application to be eligible for the ROOTS Award.
What if I am no longer working as a paid employee of a licensed or approved child care facility after I applied for the 2026 Mini ROOTS Award?
Applicants must be actively employed as a paid employee (at least 20 hours a week) of a licensed or approved child care facility, school district Pre-Elementary paraprofessionals, Head Start (including tribal), or Parents as Teachers at the time of application in order to be eligible for the 2026 Alaska SEED ROOTS Award. Eligibility is determined at the time of application.
Application Process & Status Updates
How will Alaska SEED communicate with applicants?
Alaska SEED will communicate with applicants by email. Please check your email regularly, to include the junk folder, to ensure timely receipt of communications from Alaska SEED.
How do I know if my application has been received?
Applicants will receive an automated email confirmation. The email will confirm that the 2026 Alaska SEED Mini ROOTS Award application has been submitted. This email will also include a copy of the submitted 2026 Alaska SEED Mini ROOTS Award application. Please check your email inbox, as well as the junk and spam folders. Please keep a copy of this confirmation email for your records.
How will I know if my application has been approved or denied?
Alaska SEED will notify applicants who do not qualify for, or are denied, a 2026 Alaska SEED Mini ROOTS Award. Denials may occur if your application or IRS Form W-9 is not completed by the deadline communicated to you by email.
Alaska SEED will not send notifications to applicants who qualify for the 2026 Alaska SEED ROOTS Award and who have submitted a completed application and IRS Form W-9. Please refer to your email confirmation on application delivery.
If I’m not sure my application was received, should I apply a second time?
Please apply just one time. Immediately after you submit your application, you will receive an automatic confirmation email. Follow these steps to ensure your application is submitted and received:
- Check your email inbox or junk email for a verification email from Alaska SEED.
- Open the email.
- Save this confirmation for your records.
Tax Forms & Financial Information
What if my Alaska SEED ROOTS Award application and/or IRS Form W-9 are incomplete?
Alaska SEED will contact the applicant by email to follow up on incomplete applications and/or IRS Form W-9s. Applicants will be provided with a deadline by which the 2026 Alaska SEED Mini ROOTS Award application and/or IRS Form W-9 must be completed.
Failure to follow up by submitting the requested information and/or documents by the deadline provided will result in closure of the application and no 2026 Alaska SEED Mini ROOTS Award payment will be sent.
Do I need to submit a W-9 with this application?
Yes. Alaska SEED needs a completed and signed W-9 to approve your application. If your W-9 is incomplete or is not attached to your application, Alaska SEED will contact you directly.
IRS Form W-9 is a legal document and must be free of any errors. To avoid mistakes, delays, or denial of your application, please ensure your W-9 form is completed neatly and accurately. Use only blue or black ink, or complete the form digitally. Do not scribble, scratch out, write over, erase, use white-out, or spill anything on the form. If your W-9 is incomplete, you will need to resubmit it. Please follow these steps to ensure your information is accurate:
- Download the W-9 form here and save it to your computer.
- You are considered an individual when using this form. Remember to complete the form with your personal information, using your first and last name and your social security number.
- There is an example of a completed W-9 within the application form.
- Follow the instructions on the W-9 form and complete the following sections:

- 3: Select “Individual/sole proprietor or single-member LLC”

Can I submit a copy of the W-9 Form I submitted last year, or do I need to complete a new one?
No. Please submit a new W-9 Form.

Is the Alaska SEED ROOTS Award taxed as income?
The Alaska SEED ROOTS Award is taxed as income. Taxes are not taken out upon distribution. Recipients are responsible for claiming the Alaska SEED ROOTS Award when they file their income taxes for 2026 and paying any applicable tax.
Will the award funds impact my personal taxes?
If you receive this award, it is considered personal income for 2026. Please check with the IRS, an accountant, or a tax specialist to understand your personal tax implications.
How do I estimate my taxes or prepay?

Am I going to receive a 1099 Form from thread to file my taxes next year?
Yes, you will receive a 1099 Form from thread’s finance department.
Award Payments & Funding Details
When can I expect to receive my Alaska SEED ROOTS Award?
You can expect to receive your Alaska SEED Mini ROOTS Award by December 31, 2026.
What if the Alaska SEED ROOTS Award check is lost or misplaced?
A $32 stop payment fee will be deducted when a replacement check must be issued for lost or misplaced checks or checks which are undeliverable when an incorrect mailing address is supplied.
Where does the funding for the 2026 Alaska SEED Mini ROOTS Award come from?
The 2026 Alaska SEED Mini ROOTS Award is funded by the State of Alaska Preschool Development Grant B-5.
SEED Registry Membership & Account Management
Is there an age limit to join the Alaska SEED Registry?
Yes. All applicants who apply to join the Alaska SEED Registry must be 16 years old and working or learning in the early childhood and/or school-age profession to be eligible.
How do I check my Alaska SEED Registry membership status?
To confirm your membership status in the Alaska SEED Registry, please refer to your most recent Alaska SEED Career Ladder certificate for your expiration date. You can also log in to the ServicePortal to check your status.
I applied for or renewed my Alaska SEED Registry membership. When will I find out if my Registry application is processed?
You will receive an email notification that Alaska SEED has received your Alaska SEED Registry application. Alaska SEED Registry applications are being processed as usual, within 30 business days in the order they are received.
Can I upload documents to my Alaska SEED profile while my registry application status is pending?
No, you cannot upload training or education documents to your Alaska SEED profile if your registry status is pending. Once your registry has been evaluated and you receive your Alaska SEED certificate, you can log in and upload your documents for reevaluation.
Registry & Award Application Requirements
My Alaska SEED Registry application is in review. Can I apply for this award?
Yes. If your Alaska SEED Registry application has been submitted in full and is marked with the status “Pending” (in review by the Alaska SEED team), you are eligible to apply for the Alaska SEED ROOTS Award.
What if I submitted an Alaska SEED Registry application and it’s still pending? Will this delay my Alaska SEED ROOTS Award application?
No, your ROOTS application will still be processed with your “submitted” application that is pending.
I’m not currently in the Alaska SEED Registry. Can I apply for the 2026 Mini ROOTS Award?
Yes, but you must apply for both the Alaska SEED Registry and 2026 Mini ROOTS Award at the same time. Join the Alaska SEED Registry here.
Will my Alaska SEED level affect the amount of the ROOTS Award I receive?
No. Your Alaska SEED level does not affect the amount of your ROOTS Award.
